Regularly
exercise and keep fit
Our
stress response is designed to produce action allowing us either
to run away from danger or to face up to it, and fight. Whenever
we feel threatened our stress response is activated. Fats and sugars
from the body stores pour into the bloodstream to fuel our muscles
for action. In case of injury our blood thickens and clots more
easily. This is fine where we need action but today our stress response
is frequently triggered by a vast array of minor hassles, psychological
and emotional demands. Little or no action may be necessary or possible,
so we are left with potentially harmful high levels of circulating
blood fats and sugars and with blood that will clot more easily.
As part of the 'R' Plan the best way to use up these stores of energy,
is to take regular exercise which will also achieve fitness and
help control body weight, both of which can lead to a sense of well-being
and increase in self-esteem. Another important indirect benefit
of exercise and fitness attainment is the opportunity to develop
social contacts and make new friends at leisure centres and fitness
clubs. It is also a time for you to nurture your relationships with
others, for example on family walks.
